Ahhh, whether we are ready or not tomorrow arrives and when life gives you lemons Robin makes lemonade. Just about the time her mother passed away Robin had ordered craft room furniture from the Martha Steward collection. Sitting in boxes it waited for her return. Now put together it is such a great set and the color "rhododendron leaf" is so soothing. She ordered the same paint color from Martha's paint colors and painted some of her existing pieces in the same color.

Her best friend Brim has got a cozy spot to hang out when she is crafting away...that's the thing...Robin is one of those people who is crafty at heart.

BOM Mystery Class

Our monthly BOM mystery class was held yesterday at BJ's Quilt Basket. Which meant I was up at 0430 sewing my blocks! Something in my life has got to get some tweaking because the way it is running right now is NO FUN! I am in a perpetual state of tiredness. So much so that when HH was driving me around running errands in the afternoon....I fell asleep. The kind of asleep where you head is bobbing around like one of those bobble head dolls!

Today I am going to get organized. I bought some office supplies, I am clearing out the file cabinet and I am going to streamline my life (I do this about every 6 months...or at least I decide to do this every 6 months). Let me know what the #1 thing you do that makes your life more organized!

Shakespeare...hummm

Well it was a long day at work yesterday. Especially when every time I walked down the hall and caught a glimpse outside...it was sunny! To work...or not to work...that is the question, whether 'tis nobler in the mind to work. The slings and arrows of outrageous employers...or to take arms against a sea of charts? Sometimes...I just totally crack myself up! I think I was channeling Shakespeare! LOL Then I remembered my favorite quote from the Pin site...and then I said awwww, the devil knows me...I am a stinker.

For those that are interested here is the article but I could only paste one of the photos. Linda wrote a wonderful article about quilting. This morning is first Saturday at BJ's so I'll be sharing tomorrow.

Whether you're a quilt maker, an avid collector or both, there is a limit to how many beds you have in the house to bedeck with these textile treasures. It's a dilemma — you want to enjoy these quilts and not keep them shuttered in a dark closet waiting for “someday” when the time is right to bring them out of hiding. But what's a fabric lover to do?

The answer? Use them in some unexpected places beyond the bed.

On the wall

Quilts as art have come into their own recently; they're on par with prized paintings collected worldwide. Since quilts come in myriad sizes and shapes, it's important to find the just-right location for display.

A large quilt can be the focal point in an entryway or over a sofa, or it can hang high on a multi-story wall. Like any art, the colors should be compatible with the room's decor and the size proportionate to the other furnishings.

Many quilt owners like to rotate their collection seasonally, swapping out fall foliage for some wintry snowflakes and on to spring flowers.

Marilyn Ulrich, owner of the Bend store QuiltWorks, notes, “I have beige walls in most rooms, so I can change out the quilts monthly or at least seasonally, and enjoy my collection during the year. The hangers remain in place; I just swap the quilts out.”

A stairwell provides the perfect venue for a grouping of small quilts going up the wall — much like an artist's gallery — and they're easily accessible for changing.

Getting the hang of it

Hanging a quilt on the wall is a simple process if the quilt has a “sleeve” on the back. This narrow fabric channel makes it easy to slide in a decorative curtain rod to support the quilt while it hangs. The rod can have ornamental finials on the ends, or be a simple straight version just long enough to sit in wall-mounted brackets. On very large quilts, a heavier pipe may be used to prevent sagging.

Another option for hanging is to mount a rod or wire on the wall and use clip-on curtain rings across the quilt top. Or, mount a rod on the wall using brackets and simply drape the quilt over the extended rod. A rod-mounted quilt makes a great bed headboard.

Depending on its size, a quilt can also be framed (with or without matting) and hung as if it were a picture, either with or without a visible hanger.

Whatever method you use to hang a quilt on the wall, it's imperative that the fabric weight is supported to avoid distortion and stress on the fibers. This is especially important when showcasing antique quilts, which are sometimes fragile from age.

Not all quilts are bed size, and smaller quilts are often made with freestanding corner pockets on the underside. A wooden dowel cut to length can be inserted into the pockets to support the quilt for hanging on wall-mounted hooks hidden behind the quilt.

Small quilts can be hung individually or in groupings and are often held in place just with straight pins hidden on the backside.

A variety of quilt hanging devices can be used for wall mounted display. Ackfeld Wire (www.ackfeldwire.com) offers shaped metal hangers in multiple styles and themes. Hang It Dang It (www.hangitdangit .com) sells a magnetic hanging system using only a single nail in the wall. Several companies offer shaped wooden hangers with a clamping system to hold the quilt in place.

Remember, quilts don't have to be hung straight — they can be hung angled, draped or folded, depending on the background space.

Wherever you display a quilt on the wall, be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight to avoid fiber damage from UV rays.

Off the wall

In addition to hanging quilts on the wall, there are many other ways to display them throughout your home.

Anna Bates, owner of local shop Woolie Mammoth Quilt Designs, and local blogger (www.wooliemammoth .blogspot.com), encourages people to keep quilts out on display and enjoy them in many ways. She said, “Quilts are made to be used, enjoyed and loved, not stored. I even use them as table coverings and we eat on them.”

A wooden quilt stand, available in many styles from traditional to contemporary, can hold one or more quilts for viewing. Simply fold the quilt over the support rung in an attractive manner to showcase the piecing or stitching you love.

Small quilts or quilt blocks can be tabletop features when hung from a small vertical rack. The easiest way is to sew a small sleeve on the underside and support the quilt with a dowel spanning the rack's vertical supports.

Large quilts can be used to cover sofas or chairs, or hung on tracks to create room dividers in an expansive area. They can also be folded and placed at the foot of the bed, doing double duty as decoration and extra blanket.

Many of today's decorators (and hotels) are using skinny quilts as so-called bed banners — narrow, colorful quilts draped across the end of the bed over another covering.

Use rectangular quilts as bench covers, table toppers or basket liners. They're perfect under glass to decorate a coffee table, while still protecting the quilt.

Don't forget about windows as a display area. Quilts can double as curtains, valances and tie-backs, or be used to cover a cornice board.

Use quilts in the bathroom for a shower curtain. There's no damage to the quilt — just hang it with clip-on rings and add a clear vinyl liner to prevent waterlogging.

If you have many quilts to display in a single area, a ladder rack may be the answer. With individual rungs, several quilts can be draped in a small footprint.

Simply draping quilts over stair banisters is an easy way to showcase them, and you can change them out on a whim.

Small quilts or blocks can also be used to cover pillow fronts or seat cushions on wooden chairs or stools. It's easy to hand stitch them to an existing pillow or cushion surface.

Should you run out of room to display your collection, and it's necessary to put some “away,” consider folding them with the decorative side out and stacking in a glass-front shelving unit. They'll be dust free and can still be enjoyed while they're awaiting their turn for an outing.

Don't forget a covered porch, patio or entry courtyard as a display area. Themed quilts add interest to outdoor gatherings. While sun and weather can damage fabrics over time, short displays aren't harmful. If you hang a quilt outdoors for a long period, or indoors with consistent sun exposure, you can prolong its life by using a UV spray protectant.

When you're a quilt-maker, you have endless opportunities to showcase quilts in your decorating, as Vicki Jensen, owner of BJ's Quilt Basket notes. “You're not limited by ready-made decor items; just purchase fabric and create whatever your vision is for your decorating needs — from traditional to contemporary to country — there are no boundaries.”

A Solid Day

It is off to work today but yesterday was a good day. One of those solid days where you can say it was a day worth being. I met Robin for some coffee and eats at one of my favorite off the beaten path places in Bend, McKay's Cottage. The former home of a lawyer in town was moved...yes the entire home was moved to OB Reily Rd. and they serve the best breakfast in town. I can honestly say I have never eaten lunch there because I can't stand not having breakfast! They have a bakery case and an interesting selection of choices from the traditional to the edgy. But really...could you pass up a latte that looks like this!!!

I have also been doing a LOT of daydreaming about our future home. Our lot is in Sisters and someday we are going to break ground...maybe someday soon. But in the meantime HH and I dream and talk and dream and talk. The lots left front corner is where all those utilities are located behind Enzo and I and then runs to the right beyond the photo. I am not sure how much sewing I'll get done with a view like that!

Remember I mentioned that a few photos from my home were featured in the local paper. The article was written by Linda Turner Griepentrog the newest independent writer for The Bulletin. There was one mistake in the article...not by Linda but during the editing process...they said I owned the Woolie Mammoth Quilt Store!!! LOL No wonder I am tired all the time!!! I now have 3 jobs!! The one disappointing issue in the article is that the photographer took MANY photos and several of them were of Enzo on his bed quilt, sitting in front of quilts, lying underneath quilted wallhangings...not one was in the article. Even though the article came out on Tuesday I haven't had the heart to show it to him. March?!!! How Did That Happen???? Check Out The New Contest!

OMG! It has happened! I have finally aged to that year where time seems to be moving so fast it's a blur. I cannot believe it is March! 3 more months and Connor and Emily will have lived in Illinois for 1 whole school year. Only 2 more years to go and the world will be their oyster (hopefully that oyster is back in the Pacific Northwest). My cousin Kristina gets married in June and a trip to the land of magic with my grandson is scheduled...in 3 very short months. So...is time moving at the speed of a hare or a turtle for you?

The sunny days in San Francisco are a sweet memory as we continue with the last hurrah of winter. Enzo is loving the stuff. By the time he comes back in he looks like a strange Christmas tree with frozen snowballs hanging off his fur, lol The early morning snow is so beautiful with the landscape lit up by it's reflections and there is some satisfaction with taking that first step on the fresh stuff. As I am typing I can hear in the distance the warriors of the road clearing crew. Call me weird but I think that job of scooping the early morning snow with the radio rocking to music would be a great job.

Enzo must have spotted some deer bedded down under the trees.

This is going to be a long as in length, blog today. The reason, I didn't want to put these photos into a slide show because it doesn't allow you to click on them to enlarge. And you are going to want to take a good look at them because the Woolie's at QuiltWorks have been busy!

I am definitely going to be making this one! MaryAnn is making this as a shop sample and I love it! Marilyn, owner of QuiltWorks has the pattern on order. Thanks Marilyn, you saved me shipping.

"Mary from Madras" is a wool project machine and this snowman is adorable!

The projects in the photos above and below were completed by "Mary from Bend" When you click on the crow photo they have real little glasses on! and the wool garden quilt...well it is just stunning.

Can you believe this little guy!!! He has his own quilt. Created by Sandy...you know the Woolie who can do it all...quilt, clean, cook, shop, look cute...that's Sandy! So here is the thing...I am going to run a contest with a little bundle of goodies as a prize. You need to post on this blog a suggested name for this little rabbit and we'll put your name in the dog dish. You will be entered just by making a suggestion. I can't guarantee that Sandy will like any of the names suggested but it will give her some choices since that was a discussion at Woolies.

I have simply got to make this pillow. Created by Anne of Cottons 'n Wool it combines two of my favorite things, wool and embroidery!

Psspt, Beth...Marilyn has been working on her own stuff! I think you need to get a sheep so she can make you some wool blankies! Marilyn you are as photogenic as ever and such a cute hair style.

This was an interesting project. Anne took an embroidery pattern and finished both in embroidery and wool...isn't it amazing. It doesn't look like the same pattern was used.

And last but not least, Claudine was dreaming of spring time. So sweet and look at the great carrier she has for her projects.

So as you can see the Woolies do not disappoint. I now have added at least 5 more projects to my list of "must makes."

It Is The Love Of Fabric...

It is the love of fabric that drives us to seek out fabric stores where ever we travel. I may have been a little out of my element in Britex. 4 stories of all things sewing...can you imagine an entire floor of notions! The few customers that were there on a Saturday morning with me were designer types. Stylish with that haughty look. Even the sales clerks seemed like they were styling...and the look on their faces when I told them I was looking for wool that I might felt! Sacre Bleu!!!

What is truly amazing is that this store and the needle point store in the slide show have been around since I was a youngster! When I was a kid my parents would take us to SF and we'd have the run of the town...anywhere you could walk or take a bus. I visited Golden Gate park annually...and going to China Town, walking around eating roast duck that had moments before hung in the window. I attended numerous symphony performances, operas (my mom's favorite) and of course the Ice Capades! It is a different town now. Although I felt safe enough on my own during the day...night is another story.

Quilt Expo!

Look what I came home too! By a stroke of luck I flew in on Sunday instead of Monday!

If you remember last Friday I wrote about my trip to the Quilt Expo in...I believe San Mateo??? What can I say...one city just runs right into the next one without any warning, lol. We thought we were going to a quilt show but instead it was just one giant vendor mall with a few quilts hung by a local guild. I was surprised about the variety of goods that were not fabric for sale at the show. And the sales tax sticker shock was...a shocker! I also noticed that there were quite a few patterns I had never seen before...so many quilts and so little time. Although it was fun to window shop the booths only one made me sing! That is where I found bought the kit for Crow Gossip which was featured in the 2011 Fall issue of Primitive Quilts. Yummy wool!

Catching Up & Don't Forget, Last Day For The Give Away!

Even though I had a great time with my sister...I am so happy to be home with HH and Enzo. And...even though the weather was fantastic and my house was covered in snow...I still am happy to be home. The next 3 days I will be playing catch up, sharing all the photos I took while gone. So here is slide show #1. Julie took me to visit this shop which she discovered during a previous shop hop. A lot of their stuff was at the Quilt Expo but there was definitely enough there to give a great window shopping experience.

I love the effect that my fabric diet has had on me. I am no longer a binge shopper but a discerning shopper! lol I am now a "class act" shopper! ROFLOL

Meeting With The Man!

Today was business day and my sister and I had a meeting with our attorney and this was the view from his conference room! WOW! He is awesome and has been worth every cent in "attorniness" lol. But really...I couldn't work with a view like this.

After we were finished we decided to spend the rest of the day playing...and so the Jones sisters headed for Beach street down by the waterfront.

We had lunch at an amazing dim sum restaurant and the food was exquisite. They were constantly bringing food around for you to try. We finally had to say STOP. The funny thing was we were brought a small piece of seasoned sea bass that was to die for...it was so good that we ordered a second serving. I was telling my sister how I once made a dish for my girlfriends with sea bass and it was $20 a pound! Yikes! When we went to pay our lunch bill it came to...$110!!! My sister was asking how come it was so much?? And that is when we found out that each piece of sea bass we ordered was $20! LOL. I wanted to go back and eat that $4 piece I had left on the plate! I had a banana for dinner...LOL

The thing about San Francisco is that it is a goumands' delight and you could not leave without having a cup of Blue Bottle Coffee...it taste better when they create art work on top.

And just because I was missing HH I found this giant letter "G" that reminded me he was waiting for me to come home.

The Transgender Ball was swinging into it's second day and the reigning King and Queen are the guy in the shiny white jacket and the guy in the shiny silver dress...and when I told them that no one dresses up like this in Bend...turns out they used to live on Awbrey Butte...small world. The world is filled with fascinating people and not all of them are quilters!

Starting Monday I will be posting some great slide shows and I think I will announce the winner of the Give Away on Tuesday! As for today I will be flying the friendly skies of United!

I Left My Heart In San Francisco...Wait I'm Still Here!

All I can say is WOW! What a beautiful day in the city! I hopped on the bus and headed to Union Square. I was on the hunt for Benertex...it does not exist because after all these years I discovered it is called Britex!! What an incredible place. 4 stories of all things sewing. I'll have that slide show once I get home.

This was a fascinating window display of floor to ceiling birds and when I took the photo I captured the building reflections.

My sister and I went out for Dim Sum...cause you cannot come to San Francisco without having Chinese.

We did not get to ride in this limo. But I have ridden in a limo in San Francisco...but that story is for another day.

And what would a trip to San Francisco be without a little cross dressing. When I asked "her" if I could take a photo for my quilting blog...she said in a very deep voice..."Honey, you make a quilt out of all this hair and I would love it!". I can say without a doubt...I meet the most amazing people on my travels.
My sister was laughing so hard she pee'd her pants.

The City of Love

I am venturing into uncomfortable territory. I have traveled all over the world and can duck and jive with the best of them. But traveling by myself and checking into a hotel alone...not my favorite thing. My whole day was made easier because my friend Julie who is one of the Fabric Stalkers was picking me up at the airport and spending the day quilt shopping. The flight was smooth and short because my seat mate was a pleasant woman who had recently relocated to Central Oregon and was heading to Arizona to drive back with her DH who had just retired. We talked the entire way!
Julie picked me up and we headed quilt shopping. You won't see those photos until I get back home because I haven't figured out how to do the sideshows on the iPad. The amazing thing is that at the first shop we were told there was a quilt show at the fair grounds!!! Which means...Vendor Mall!
When we got there it turned out not to be a quilt show but a quilt expo...one giant Vendor mall!!! Now you'd think that I would have gone stark raving mad but in fact the quilt diet has done something wonderful...turned me into a discerning shopper! Who would have thought. I bought one wool kit for the wall hanging called "Crow Gossip" in Primitive Quilts Magazine!
The city of love was in her full glory! Warm, sunny and did I say warm.

This is way different than the town of Bend...I know the ocean is just over that hill!

And here is my savior! And creator of a awesomely fun day...Julie! Look at her standing so calmly in a vendor mall with NO package in her hands! After the vendor mall we visited one more quilt store and had Gyros for lunch...yummy.

The Wild Blue Yonder (don't forget the giveaway!)

Somebody has been pouting for the last 24 hours. Dogs are amazing. I do believe they can mind meld...just like Spock! Yesterday morning HH brought my suitcase down so I could start packing...uh oh...someone wouldn't eat their breakfast and then on all our errands begged the drive up teller...the gas station attendant for treats! Kinda like I do when I am not so happy! lol He has been watching my every move. As we were driving away from seeing Robin he started whining then we saw HH on the Hwy and he started whining, he just wanted to tell someone he wasn't happy!

I am trying to be brave. What I mean is I am only taking 2 projects with me. The little red sewing machine and a new project I prepped for the trip. I am praying that I don't run out of stuff to work on...cause that can get nasty!

I've got my project, my thread and my little scissors with a blade less than 3 inches!

I wanted to let you know that in the process of learning the Ipad and having to get a new password for the web mail cause I couldn't remember my old one I accidentally deleted a bunch of emails...so if you didn't hear from me you either are a "no reply comment" person or...I accidentally deleted you...sorry!

Time for a Give away

Today I am in full chaos mode! I am trying to get ready for an early morning departure tomorrow which mostly includes learning how to use and post to the blog from an Ipad2 and deciding what projects to bring! When I go on retreat I always bring way too many projects but when flying you have to really plan. Not too much, so as to not leave room for purchases and not so little that you run out of projects. It sounds like cooking which really scares me.

Number 1 is to figure how to lead photos and post...yikes. Today I am starting a giveaway for the woodie bag pattern. I love mine! And know that you will enjoy making an styling with this bag on your shoulder. I personalized mine and tweaked it with a few changes as you can see from the photos.

I attached some of my pins to the front and stitched "woollies" to the front.

The inside has a place for scissors, pincushion, needle case, pearl cotton, ruler, cutter, project pocket and ironing pad!

Woolie Fun!

Today I felt like having a cup of coffee and just talking with you. A little woolie blog time before I start to hit the door running. I love early mornings watching the sun come up, catching up on my email, checking out my Pin site for fun new ideas. My dear friend Robin is an early bird and so when I texted her at 0515 in the morning...she called. Life can be so challenging. In the same week she lost her mother, she also lost a nephew. Please keep her in your thoughts and if you pray...pray for relief. Life is so wonderful but it is peppered with moments of shear heartache...and so, it is those moments of calm and sweetness that you must roll around in it like a pig in a mud puddle. It reminds of a story years ago...I let my little dog Yoshi (9lb toy poodle) out the front door for a little romp in the front yard. We lived on a cul de sac and it was safe for dogs and kids. When he came back he was literally covered in dog shit!!!! As in matted, stinky grin on his face....or rather excuse my French...shit eating grin dog face! I was horrified that someone would grab my dog and rub excrement all over him. Not being an experienced dog owner I called Robin...blabbing that I was gonna find the $%^& who did this to my dog. Robin explained that dog like to jump right into a big pile of $%^& whether it be horse, cow or big dog...crap! We can take a lesson from them, sometime you gotta just roll right in it and come up smiling!

My redwork is coming along...I am so excited about this project...LOL...I think I say that about every project! But thankfully to my future DIL Emily who last night on SKYPE told me I could watch season 2 of Downton Abbey on the Internet by going to PBS I was able to get another area stitched.

The Woolie blog is not only to write my ramblings and share my world...both quilting/wool and non quilting but to also share what I discover along the way. With that said I have added 2 new blogs to the blog list on the right hand side for yours and my pleasure. The first is La Maison de Maristella who hails from Verona, Italy. I love expanding my world both in creating and connecting. She has a google translator bar so you can click and read in English. The second one I added was for my own guilty pleasure...Beyond Kimchee Korean food is not only extremely healthy but very savory and I want to learn to make more dishes at home since in Bend, Oregon...I would have to travel 3 hours over a mountain to find a Korean restaurant or store! Both of these blogs are now added on the right hand side of the Woolie blog on the blog list...Enjoy!!! Let's meet tomorrow for coffee again!

February's UFO

Here it is...my February UFO completed! From 2002! I only know this because that is the date on some of the blocks! These are friendship blocks from the former Material Girls that used to meet at the Mountain Country Mercantile (since closed) The original group numbered barely 10 on a good day but over the years it has grown to 30+ on potluck day and meets at the Deschutes County Historical Museum.

I had a vague memory that this quilt had a story but I couldn't remember what it was? So I asked some of the founding members...But the story goes that the Material Girls each gave a fat quarter to the birthday girls each month...but, I guess when my turn rolled around I asked if the people who wanted could make me a block. I guess this caused a tipping of the universe and some drama ensued. Thus the worm block...which was a note that I had opened a can of worms! LOL Anyhoo...I only remember that there were issues but not the ins and outs of the entire story. That is one of the things I like about myself...the ability to not take the drama, pain, anger forward but, to leave it where it belongs, in the woven fabrics of history and smile at the lovely blocks that were made.

All I had left was tacking down the binding and it was done. I love it! a piece of the old Material Girl group and the Mountain Country Mercantile! If you are reading this from Arizona Mary Jo...yours is the Japanese Kimono!

I had to show you a photo of this wonderful table topper. Last night was book club at my house. Since the book was a lighthearted read I asked those who felt comfortable to bring a funny story from their lives. Laughter is the best medicine. I laughed till I cried! lol What was also wonderful is one of the book club members is also a Fabric Stalker. She came a little early so we could have a pre-bookclub support group and brought this WIP. Mine is still in kit form...but oh is it ever a beauty. I am going to have to get it done before this fall...that is all there is too it!

High & Lows

Life is a series of highs and lows. Lately it seems many of those close to me are sliding down in the lows. What do you do to survive your lows? Post me a comment so the rest of us can get some tips on surviving this experience called life! I tend to do mindless things like playing Solitaire on the computer. Depending on the depth of my low I may not even have the energy to sew...the math take too much work...that quarter inch is a killer! LOL. On the other hand embroidery with one color is mindless and I love the end result!

Starting today this week will be a busy one. I have book club tonight which I am hosting. I chose to host "Bossy Pants" by Tina Fey because I wanted more laughter in my life. I've asked everyone to bring one personal funny story to share. Laughter really is the best medicine in life! And tonight I want to laugh so hard I pee my pants!!! The beginning of the week I am working and getting ready to fly to California for a meeting...the best part is one of the Fabric Stalkers is picking me up at the airport and we are hitting some of her favorite quilt stores!!! Since I am crossing state lines I am definitely going off my fabric diet!! I am sooooo dang excited. I have a lot of handwork to prep for the trip....hummm what do I want to do? It is a good life when you have so many choices.

Finished quilting my blue table runner...I love it...next the binding and I will have a new project done. This cannot count as a UFO because I purchased the pattern in the last 6 months!

A Treasure!

Look at what I found! I was having to go from one side of town to the other when I decided to stop by one of my favorite junk stores. They had a bunch of distressed painted tool boxes...some in green, yellow and red. I love the versatility it will provide for some Prim decor ideas I have. And can't you see changing the theme by the seasons or holidays!

Today I am heading out with my friend Irene for coffee and girlfriend time. Although I do have plans to set aside some time to quilt. The soul has to be filled somehow! I have a pile of projects that just need a little done here and there and they would be completed...but...I do hear the siren call of a new project! LOL I hope your weekend is filled with fun, which reminds me of a funny scene in a series I am watching called Downton Abbey. it is a British series about an aristocratic family and their servants. To make a long story short the family is meeting a long lost cousin and his mother who are "middle class" and they are appalled that the son has found a "job" with a solicitor and will have weekends off. The matriarch asks, "What's a weekend?" I laughed out loud! I guess if you are rolling in the dough and have never had to work the concept of weekend has no meaning...go figure! Enjoy!

My Favorite Woolies

I love hanging with my Woolies...although I am thinking I need to hang with a more "non-productive" crowd so I can feel good about myself! LOL Being easily distracted from my own project and wanting to start something new is always a challenge for me when we get together. But on the upside, every time we get together it is like seeing a "wool show" and I am inspired not only about new projects but life. They are a wise group with a varied life experience. Which means any problem you might have, someone in the group will have a solution.

For sure Mary will have this done by next Valentine's Day!

The penny rugs above and below are Sandy's...she is young, pretty and project prolific...I think we should not allow her to stitch but just sit and listen to the rest of us give her advice! After all, we are old, aging well (which means not so pretty) and slower with our projects. Ah, it is with fond memories that I remember when I was the young one of the group...((sigh))

Mary from Madras (we have been calling her this ever since their were 2 Mary's in a former group) Made this penny rug and the snow man at the end...for some reason the computer wouldn't allow me to rotate them for better viewing. So tip you head to the left (don't try to sip coffee while doing this)

Quilt Show!

Is your schedule as crazy as mine? Although I can complain with the best of them about my insane life, I WOULD go insane if I was bored. I might have told you this story before but anyhoo...with an insane life comes memory lapse.

The first year HH and I were married I nearly drove him insane. He is a peaceful guy, his life is balanced, he naps at lunch and it is not uncommon to catch him just sitting quietly. Whereas I am like the Tasmanian Devil. One day in that first year I asked him...how can you just sit there??? Don't you want/need to do this, and that and this again???? (said in a slightly high pitched voice) His answer to me, "how can you know what you want in life if you don't sit quietly and day dream?" I SHOULD HAVE HAD A V-8!!! I had never had anyone say that to me...I spent most of my life with my family just watching me and shaking their heads! We now have a sign that hangs in our bedroom that says, "Daydream." People who read the blog or know me often ask how do you get so much done...it is not always a good thing and my goal is to find that place where I can find peace...a balance between the frenetic and the quiet. A little bit of this...a little bit of that...

And now for the Quilt Show...which is what led me to this big run on thought about an insane life...I forgot to post the First Friday Quilt video from QuiltWorks. If you remember I couldn't even get near the quilts. Working that day I arrived after the show started and it was packed...as in scary packed. Most likely because the feature quilter, Sally Rogers is such a popular local quilter. She made her first quilt 54 years ago as a newlywed on a Singer featherweight her grandmother had given her. I love the show...and every quilt in it! Although I definitely have a quirky bent to some of my quilting...I am a traditional gal. Enjoy the show!

Will You Be My Valentine?

It is really hard not to be in love with a man who will give you a Valentine like this one! A Pink phone, dog and popcorn all in one card!

The photo shoot was interesting. Since the photographer really has no idea about quilting. So you just point him in the direction of the quilts and he is off and clicking...you shamelessly try to get Enzo in every photo and at the same time duck out of each photo. Alas he made me sit for a couple of shots. After taking dozens of photos and knowing that they probably will only use 3-4 I am hoping the editor weeds out the ones of me and keeps the ones of Enzo! lol I did meet the deadline and my house was clutter free...in fact I am kinda enjoying the momentary bliss of having the clutter hidden, lol.

I caught a photo of the photographer taking a picture of my front porch while Linda the writer talks with Enzo.

You will be hearing more about Linda in March. We had time to chat after the photo shoot and I was in awe of all that she does...a former editor of Sew News, proofs patterns for magazines and fabric companies...she writes her own patterns...and both she and her husband each have their own sewing rooms!!!! She also tells me that Hancock's monthly feature sale is Mary Ellen's Best Press and if you have never used this starch product it is the best!!! She would know since her DH is the manager of the #8 store in the nation...right here in Bend!! In March I will be doing a in depth interview with her for the blog...along with a sewing room photo shoot of hers and her husband's sewing room! I wonder who has the larger stash???

Confessions of a Quilter

When the boys were young and I would get on a "clean up this clutter" binge they would ask, "Is someone coming to dinner?" With that said if they saw me in the last 24 hours they would know someone is coming over. I got a call from a quilter (Linda) I met last year who is a writer/editor. She is a Woolie follower and was writing an article for the local paper about decorating with quilts. When asked if I would like to have my house/quilts photographed for the article I balked because I don't think of myself as a quilt decorator. I had a couple of big quilts on the wall...that's it. But when she started questioning me about my quilts I realized...I have quilts all over the place. I am NOT an art quilter. I am a home quilter. I make the quilts for my own creative enjoyment and then we use them.

Well...they are coming over today! Of course I spent the whole weekend "not at home" cleaning but having fun with girlfriends. Which meant yesterday I started to pick up this joint. It is not that HH and I are pigs but we really live in our home. We occupy every room with our lives. We eat breakfast and read the paper at our dining table. Our main lap top resides in the living room. We eat dinner in our kitchen and we sit watch TV while I stitch in our family room. The only room in our house that doesn't get used on a daily basis is a guest room which I had totally trashed because I store my extra batting pieces in that closet and before retreat I needed some. The life clutter had to be dealt with...the mail on the breakfast table, the newspapers on the dining table...clutter, clutter, clutter. They are coming at 1130 today...will I be done in time?

Enzo is exhausted from the effort it takes to avoid the vacuum cleaner!

Of course I had a deadline...which for my brain means stress...which means I started doing stuff that had nothing to do with the cleaning deadline. While my ADHD brain started pinging around I found a stitchery on Pinterest that I loved. When I contacted the person who had it on their bulletin board she said that she didn't know the name of the pattern and that it was discontinued. Not to be deterred from being able to make it and wanting to avoid cleaning I made a copy on my printer, went to the blue print mapping place and asked them to blow it up to an 8 x 10 size. I came home and then printed it on Transfer Eze. Which meant I started stitching not cleaning!!! which is why this morning I have to finish cleaning!!!

I backed my main fabric with a fusible fabric interfacing that Karen from My Yellow Farm House sent me last year. By fusing it to the back you can't see the thread cross overs of your stitching. I am using a 50 wt Aurafil thread with an embroidery needle. I'm going to put a red pieced sashing around it when done and hang it in my sewing room! The whole sewing machine design is made up of words that have to do with the stitchery craft. Fun huh!

Final Chapter 2012 Quiet River

Ahhh the final chapter of the 2012 Quiet River Retreat. Fabric is such a little part of the retreat for me...which seems ludicrous since it is a quilting retreat. The most important part of the retreat is being with my friends. Being able to sit around in your pj's all day and talk of grand kids, kids, husbands, siblings, health, the news, books, movies, grief, joy, retirement??, careers, homes, retirement?? oh yeah... and quilts.

The Fabric Stalkers have been together doing our friendship/quilting dance for years and the retreats have evolved into 3 major ones with short get togethers in between. Quiet River, Sunriver and the Beach. Each one has it's own flavor and since the Quiet River is in town we save travel costs and our family responsibilities can still be met. Allowing us to make that sports meet, business meeting, workout schedule... It is a relaxing retreat which has included a movie run...the most stressful part of this retreat is making sure the photos taken for this blog show every one's best side! LOL

Today we are all back to reality, concerned for our Robin and dreaming about the Sunriver Retreat which is in April.

The quilt below has a story...completed by Irene at retreat it is the 2011 BJ's Quilt Basket BOM. She made it for her car mechanic and his wife for all their help. It has license plate fabrics, travel fabrics...and all around fun fabrics.

and because she only calls them in times of dire need she included a label that says it all....Quilters are the most generous people in the world!

The slide show from the last day is short because we sat around talking a good part of the morning but it was a sweet way to say good bye. I hope you all take the time for yourself and your girlfriends because it will have the largest impact on your health!

Quiet River 2012 Day 3

Day 3 started with a bang...plans for mega quilting sessions and yoga...then a call came and Robin's mom in hospice care was declining and so a 15 hour drive was ahead of her and for us, a day of worry. Like mother hens with a chick on the loose we knew she had been up since 0400 quilting and now was faced with an emotional trip. Quickly wrapping the details of life so she could start heading south she was gone...and left a big hole. An event like this makes me consider how incredibly important friendship are to our lives.

Lately life has been sprinkled with event like this and as they say the circle of life...well, it's a circle and so take every moment you can and enjoy!

Quiet River Day 2!

First and foremost I must say that we miss the Fabric Stalkers who couldn't make the retreat! Dale, Julie & Lindsey...we love you! Secondly...everyone says "hi" Twilene...I can't respond to your comment cause you are listed as a "no reply" follower. You can fix that by reading the "how too" on the right column of the blog.

Day 2 was sweet. I thought about my mom...a lot and feel so blessed to be here quilting. She always loved telling her friends that we were quilting at Quiet River. This morning we got up and started stitching. Later in the morning everyone was in and out on various errands. I rode "Patty" home to pick up some binding and my "Flippin Bird" project. Enzo was sooooo happy to see me, so I stopped and played for a while. Nancy got a haircut. Val & Irene went to work out and Robin went home to bring her garbage cans in...and then we all met up at the movies and watched "One For The Money." Fun movie.

I wanted to show you something that I am so freaking happy about! I occasionally like to save color coordinated scraps from previous project in individual baggies. This photo shows some of the scraps from my Primitive Gatherings Summer Stars ( another WIP)

I picked out several same sized strips and sewed them together.

...and then I used them as a border for my latest stitchery...isn't he sooooo adorable!

Drum roll please! The unveiling of the latest step of "Flippin Bird" projects. If you are a recent follower...let me explain the project. One of the Fabric Stalkers had been dragging a project that she lost interest in to every retreat...in the seat of her chair. Each year we listened to the angst of having that project in her chair and finally a year ago it was proposed that we take it out and pass it around with each of us adding and recreating the project! Then in our excitement we figured...we all had a "Flippin Bird" in our life and so we would chose one and pass it around for each member to add something to the quilt. And so these are the "Flippin' Birds." You ask why it is called Flippin Bird...use your imagination and then add to that the fact that the quilt blocks that were being dragged around were called "birds in the air."

Quiet River 2012

It is during the challenging times that you realize how incredibly important girlfriends are to putting perspective into life. You can see as you unpack that there are common items that are packed no matter what type of quilter you are...sewing machine, ott light, cutting mat, rotary cutter, chocolate, brownies, nuts, maxi pads and cell phones. With these items you can have an enjoyable weekend.

Everyone is on a big UFO kick and the project boxes were numerous. As you can see from the slide show...some of us didn't get a project photographed. But not to worry...today I will taking a lot of photos. The first day is always a breaking of the quilting ice. We catch up on each others lives, we talk about some of our worries, we eat (Tate & Tate) and we make tentative plans for the rest of the weekend. Some bring lists, some fly by the seat of their pants...and some are so worn out by life that they are caught day dreaming and mumbling...but it matters not because we are together!

Organization As A Shopping Tool

Before I begin my thoughts on "organization as a shopping tool" I thought I would share a few photos I took at Anne's house because I am always amazed at the little things that make such a big difference. There are those who walk into Pier One and walk out with an exact replica of their displays...and then there are those like me who have a hodge podge, where a decorator will say, "you have a lot going on here." As in...decor confusion. And then, there is Anne who seems to just know what will make a statement and it all flows together! Like this lamp on top of a stack of books. They could be your all time favorite books, in a kitchen they could be cook books...in guest rooms good reading or children's books! So sweet!

Wish this photo wasn't so blurry but I must have been laughing when I took it. Simple and great...one block tacked over batting and sticky board and placed on a plate rack.

I am going to start making small quilts. You can use up some favorite fabrics and have the satisfaction of a job well done!

...and now... to the discussion about organization. Taking a photo of Anne's newly organized stash (this in only a small percentage of the stash) made me think...if you could see everything you had...you would be less likely to impulse shop. If there was a way to store fabric where you could see what you had and you shopped there first you might be able to retire earlier??!!!

Each box contains...a kit. Yep, a kit, they are labeled with the name. I think she should add the year purchased. When she put this organizational tool into effect she said it became much easier to stay on the fabric diet! All my kits are stuffed into drawers and I truly have no idea what is in there. I think when I build my dream sewing room I am going to do this! The boxes were purchased at JoAnn's during their 50% off sales (you gotta save money somewhere). There are so many great ideas and if you check my Pinterest site and look at the sewing room ideas...it is really fun to dream about how organized you would be...

Today I head over to Quiet River...ahhhh a long weekend of making a dent in my UFO's!

Quilting Stim

...as in...Quilting Stimulation! There are people in this world who bring nothing but excitement and stimulation to my quilting brain! I was lucky enough to spend yesterday afternoon with such a group. The interesting thing about quilters is they usually don't just quilt. They cross stitch, garden, rug hook, embroider and cook. This means there is no reason to be bored...EVER!

Anne in her process of organizing her stash, WIPs, UFOs, PhDs, books and patterns found a cross stitch project that was half done...and then she finished it! Tomorrow I will give you a peek at how she organizes. This is the thing about cleaning and organizing...you find stuff you forgot!

These are the corner stones of an ongoing project she is very close to finishing...I love when I get to that final border!

If there is one person in this world I am green with envy it is a Woolie follower named Beth...why you ask...it is because she has a way of getting my friend Marilyn to make her wool project for her!!! Here I am, living in Bend...near Marilyn and she makes these wonderful projects for her friend in another state! You are sooooo lucky Beth...isn't the latest one beautiful!

The Quiet Before The Quilting Storm...

I am heading over to Quiet River today for some last minute tweaks in anticipation of the 2012 Fabric Stalkers Quiet River Retreat which begins on Thursday. It is quiet here as many of the neighbors are snowbirds and spending the Winter in warmer climates. The river is full and flowing at a nice clip with the ducks and geese already thinking about Spring! The river is so full that part of the trail is submerged. I am so looking forward to this time of intense sewing and talking with the girlfriends. There is something so wonderful when a group of women can spend all day in their PJ's just talking and sewing... reminiscent of our more innocent times of childhood. There is a safe feeling in this place where the outside world of worries rarely intrudes...and, if it does there is someone to give you hug and reassure you that you will survive whatever comes down the river.

Later this morning I will be creating chaos at my house trying to figure out what projects I want to take over there...the best part of this retreat for me is I don't have to sweat it too much if I forget something or change my mind....my sewing room is only 2 streets over from Quiet River! It is a day filled with quilting one way or another...cause this afternoon I will be stitching at Anne's house which is always a wonderful way to spend some time!

Take my advise...spend some time with a stitching girlfriend this week, you'll look younger (cause laughter makes you look younger), you'll be less depressed (hard to be depressed when you're with friends who love you) and it is amazing what a little wine, chocolate, conversation and fabric can do for the body!

No Judgement

I am going to give myself a little grace and I am going to ask for some from all of you...cause I am computer challenged. Now you wouldn't think this cause I work on computers all day at work, I do business on a computer, I am an email queen and I have been writing some sort of blog for 3 years...but yes I occasionally get stumped and then it causes a tantrum which then freezes all brain function...and sometime results in an "ugly cry."

I was able to post the pattern for the February ornament...but it wasn't until the middle of the night that I realized that I didn't attach the ongoing directions. So I hope you printed them otherwise you are going to have to wait till I get some free time to figure it out! In posting the pattern I had to delete the January pattern which means...you have one month to print a copy and then on the 5th of each month the previous months comes off and the new one goes on. No biggie, you just need to be organized (a word that is lost in my life). To get to the pattern you click on the poinsettia button.

Isn't February's ornament adorable! Robin created something fun for February with just a touch of Christmas and a lot of love. She sewed little red seed beads all around the hearts.

1st Saturday @ BJ's Quilt Basket

For those of you who do not know what a first Sat. is, BJ's runs a program which happens on the first Sat. of each month. You sign up for the year with a $25 registration fee and then each month as long as you keep coming they give you the fabrics for the blocks...sans the background. You get one "get out of jail free" which allows you to miss one month...otherwise you pay $5 for not showing up or making your block. I am participating in the Christmas mystery. I love the fabrics they have chosen but this last month was frustrating. The enjoyment of the program is in the ease of construction resulting in beautiful blocks with enough fabric. January was challenging even for me an experienced piecer...plus I didn't have enough fabric. Vicki being gracious and understanding let you show up without your block constructed...at least for this one month.

Both she and Bevrly give concise directions on the block construction and because of the snafu in January are offering a construction class.

The top blocks are Feb. Christmas Mystery Blocks and the lower set are the ...yuck...Batik blocks.

The day was crisp and clear and the frost on the trees was beautiful...but no snow in town. The Mountain is covered and beautiful so I can live with it! lol

OMG & WOW!!!

Well, I had to start with a Wyatt & dad photo...seems as if they go to the same barber!

Yesterday was a "normal" day at work. I had some great laughs with a coworker as we contacted patients for next weeks procedures...not that the procedures were funny...or the patients...but there is nothing better about the work day than when you get to work with someone nice...who likes to laugh!

Plus my son was sweet enough to text me a photo of baby Wyatt and that made my whole day!

After work Robin and I went to First Friday at QuiltWorks! OMG and WOW, it was packed... claustrophobic packed! The feature quilter brought out the hoards and with good traveling weather it was the perfect combination. Unfortunately because of the shear volume of the people I could not get photos of the featured quilters...quilts! So next time Woolie's meet there I will be some great photos. I did get a few photos of the Valentine, red and white theme...which was wonderful. How I wish I could have seen the Red & White Quilts exhibit in New York...but this was the next best thing and now I have decided to make my own Red & White Quilt!!!

I have also had a "Bazinga" moment! While talking with Suzette who pointed out that all the red, white and pink fabrics were on sale...oh yeah I am on a fabric diet! She asked how long this was going to last...end of March! Then I realized I was going to be in San Francisco at the end of this month on business. But due to scheduling issues the meeting I was flying down for has been postponed by 2 days...24 hrs by myself in San Francisco...how am I going to occupy myself??? Hey Colleen???? want to slumber party Thursday night??? and a trip to Benertex????? on Friday???? I am going off my fabric diet that weekend. My diet is not in effect when I cross state lines!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Brown???

Today I wanted to show you a couple of things...first the something borrowed. Since discovering the Pinterest site I have gone bonkers! The Pin site is a personal bulletin board of photos saved off of the Internet and pinned to topic appropriate bulletin boards. So if you click on the Pinterest Button on the right side of the blog you will arrive at my bulletin boards. I have organized them by category and it has been an adventure! While searching for RedWorks designs I came across this little Owl and fell in love! I made a print on Transfer Eze layered onto my fabric and am ready to stitch! But....Red just did look or feel right...so I am going to do Brown Work! lol You can make a copy of him off of my Embroidery bulletin board on my Pinterest site!

I also had to figure out which UFO I would make friends with next. It is a doozy. I found a UFO that I inherited. A dear Material Girl who left for the great quilt room in the sky left her sewing room to the rest of us gals. This project was a BOM she signed up for and never made one block! It was from Fons and Porter. The problem at the time was that one month was missing. Not so bad for a scrap quilt but the setting block which is all made out of the same fabric is also missing one month. At some point I made up all the blocks...the pattern is from the Fons and Porter Magazine dated 1996!!! and I don't have a clue when I made up all the pieces...but now I am going to start putting them together. It is a big quilt with a Civil war feel to it. I know Jackie would be laughing her head off watching me work on her UFO!

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Kit

First let me give you the disclaimer...I did NOT fall off my fabric diet. The kit in this story was purchased in December when I was having anxiety about the diet! lol Secondly I am in no way trashing Jan Patek or her design business...in fact I love her patterns. I have on the other hand read on her own blog that she in the past and obviously in the present has had issues with the mailing of her orders due to some issues with the local postal office.

So here is the sequence. I ordered the kit "Here Comes Santa" on Dec. 24th. After the first of the year I started trying to track it down. First I went on the website found the contact email and sent an email. After a week when I didn't get a response I called the number and left a message. A few days later I called again but the voicemail box was full. Then I called 2 more times and finally got a hold of Byron (love his name...just like my #1 grandson) and he said he would check it out. I left a message in a comment box on the blog...and met someone else who had the same exact problem! Turns out the email address person no longer works for them so don't leave an email. Byron called back 10 minutes later! and said he sees the order but obviously something happened to it and so he was sending me out another one! Sweet!

Over a month later on January 29th it arrived...in this condition!

and the postage on it was totally amazing! Besides the Flat Rate Mailer there were 5 - 1 cent stamps, 1- 5 cent stamp and 1 - 10 cent stamp! I had no idea there were 5 & 10 cent stamps anymore!

But, it was worth it cause look at this kit! I can't wait till it moves up the list as a must do!!!

...and Jan...someone in the postal service must have it out for you!

I made it! I finished a UFO before January rolled into February! My UFO challenge is off to a great start. Lots of you know this pattern as Slideshow. I bought the Japanese panel at the Pacific International Quilt show in Seattle...the year was sometime in the early 2000's. Some of the Fabric Stalkers made a girls weekend and we hit the vendor mall!!! I finally put this wall hanging together in 2010!!! and now it is complete...my first competed UFO 2012!

Check this out! Mary aka Cornwoman finished her January UFO Challenge...and I love it...in fact I want to make this one! Great framed or as a pillow! You rock Corney!

...And just so you don't think Corney is drowning in UFO's she actually is very productive, organized and been on a fabric diet for 4 years!!! She made this adorable duffle bag for her granddaughter's birthday in June (already done!) filled with fun hair things! What a great idea!

I stopped at Fabric Depot on the way home from Portland. Even though I was sad to leave the Portland Bates Family...and baby Wyatt I stuck to my fabric diet. If you remember the diet allows for the purchase of batting, backing and notions...and that is all I bought. 3 battings, the backing for one quilt and a wooden hoop. In and Out...in the shortest amount of time I have ever spent there. I didn't want to spend a lot of time there because the temptation was incredible...but, I did take a photo of these wall hangings because I liked them.

Heading back over the mountain...and it was beautiful!

There will be lots of Quilt Bloggin' this month as I will be busy sewing so I won't think about missing Wyatt and will have lots to share. The Fabric Stalkers have their Quiet River Retreat in less than 2 weeks!!!

In Love

What can I say...I am in love! It is an amazing concept to know that no matter what happens to me...my DNA is marching into the future...way cool! Thank you all so much for the well wishes it means a lot to me. And, although at this point I can't respond individually to each congrats know that I carry them with me.

Just so you don't think I haven't been taking a stitch...anytime I am sitting in one spot for more than 10 minutes I have been stitching on Block # 11!!!! Oh yeah...block 11 is officially done! Which means one more block and then I get to begin the sashing and borders...which are somewhat complex...oh well I was able to make the bows on my last top so this one should be interesting and fun!

Hope Tuesday is filled with stitching time for you...as for me...I hope I get a little Wyatt time!

A Pinch of Quilting

These days my recipe for the good life include a pinch of quilting. It doesn't take much to make me feel good...a pinch here, a dash there...add slowly till the flavor starts mixing into a nice quilting life.

..and look at this! My Lucky Charms class at the Stitchin' Post was a very cute Valentine's Day table runner! These classes are quick and fun! Most can be done either with a 5 inch charm pack or from your stash. Just maybe...I will actually have a Valentine's Day project done by Valentine's Day!!!

It Ain't About Fabric...

Well, what can I say...when you are on a fabric diet...life can get pretty darn boring when you go shopping. HH asked me what I was taking photos of...mannequin down! Are you OK, are you ALRIGHT...basic CPR stuff.

obviously this mannequin needed a new outfit! Can you imagine having this job?

Then...I began to speculate...the mannequins in this store look are buffed out! Big muscles...

...and big pecs...and packages. Interesting that the mannequins at the store I shop at have varicose veins, sagging girls and cellulite!

...OK, I swear there will be something quilting tomorrow!

Step by Step

It is a satisfying week for me. Little by little, step by step...I am making some progress! Since embracing my UFO's, WIP's, PIGs and Phd's I have been making headway with my friends.

Which resulted in a finished UFO top! I absolutely LOVE IT! The pattern is from Kansas Trouble Quilts which was purchased with the fabrics from Holly Hills Quilt Shoppe. I started making the big presents and then stopped...for whatever life reason makes us stop in the middle of project. But I am soooo happy I picked it back up because...did I say...I LOVE IT!!!

Happy Dance & The Winner!

It came in the mail...no, not the Publisher's Clearinghouse Winner...something even better!!! My Quilter's Affair registration packet! I have been trying for years to register for a class I am interested in taking. But, due to some complications like mailbox phobia, ADD, organization disorder and calendar dysfunction I have always gotten the rejection letter. It is the only time I have received rejection letters. Every college I applied too accepted me...every job I chose to apply for I have gotten, except the one where I tried to become a scoop journalist for The Source (a local paper). I think they didn't call me back cause of age discrimination and I wasn't dressed cool, no tats, no tribal piercings. I have received the Quilter's Affair rejection letter so many times that I knew when I saw this one...I had hit the mother load! WINNER, WINNER, WINNER!

I ceremoniously opened the letter with my cool letter opener and there was my pink name badge! I had finally sent it in right away...as in, thank god I went to the mailbox, filled it out and stood at the Post Office till it opened so I could drop it in the inside slot.

I am now the proud student of a Sue Spargo "Wool Circle Play" class. I have been wanting to take one of her classes that teach all that fun stitching you can do with wool! I am going to sit in the front row and be her best student! Not like First Grade where I sat in the back row with tape across my mouth. I also get to enjoy the fun lecture called "Dots & Spots" with Tonye Phillips and Kathy Deggendorfer!

Sweet Woolie Tuesday

Yesterday started out with a beautiful snow storm and ended with a downpour that left everyone soaking wet! But...we need the moisture and so there is no complaining here. I spent the morning prepping some wool projects just in case I had to run out the door to meet a new baby grandson! Afternoon was spent at Woolies. Surprisingly even though the weather was a challenge everyone showed up at QuiltWorks. Quilt groups are such a wonderful place to rest one's soul. Everyone was working on their "special" project and of course Sandy came with many wonderful show and tells. I love her enthusiasm and creativity. I stitched, I laughed and I left with my quilting heart filled with inspiration. Check out the slide show and tell me you aren't inspired!

The Quilt Heroine

I get a daily email from Clotilde. Yesterday's featured Organizational Ideas. Some of which I had already created on my own and some I had never seen before...like quilt jaws?! or a hang out for your rulers! I love organization...I aspire to be an organizational queen...

But, most of the time I end up creating a fun kinda chaos. At book club yesterday although we were there to discuss "State of Wonder" our discussion ended on the topic of organizational chaos, how we deal with it and how our parents dealt with it...yikes. This subject is in the fore front of my brain as we meet with a designer about the layout of a future home...which means...you guessed it, a new sewing room. Now this may be in the FAR FAR future but we wanted to at least get a design down on paper so we can trudge through the rivers of approvals and paperwork ahead.

Although you may have see shots of my sewing room I wanted to show what kind of organizational tool I am using currently and talk about them.

I love this spinning rack. Not only because I can see all my little patterns but, they don't get lost in the vacuum of my sewing room. And, there is shelving on the top and bottom for stuff...you know, stuff.

This is one of my favorite things. An old thread cabinet. A drawer for my pearl cottons. A drawer for my extra bindings and 2 sewing junk drawers. Purchased in Sellwood, Oregon which is an antique mecca.

OK, now this is a little scary. I have a small closet in my sewing room that has shelving from top to bottom. But the reason I took this photo is because of those little plastic buckets. That is where I store my patterns. They fit perfectly. Anne of Cottons 'n Wool actually has hers in alphabetical order by designer. When I grow up I want to be Anne!

My rulers are stored in wooden ruler rack. I like the rack but is getting full and I tend to stuff other stuff in the rack making it look somewhat like a "ruler mash pit." next to the rack in the same photo is a plastic magazine box that I picked up at Staples and it holds the patterns I have ripped out of magazines or printed off the Internet. These patterns are considered as "must do's" in this lifetime. As opposed to the shelves of books...Mimi (a woolie follower) was right...it was dumb to pay $20 for a Quilt Mania magazine. I have decided that this fabric diet has occasionally resulted in a "Quilter's Fugue State" where you make quilt related purchases without thinking!

The "normal" stash is stacked on shelves found at Target. I do not like the idea of fabric in boxes as shown on Clotilde because I am of the belief that in order to create a wonderful quilt your fabric needs to breath, like a fine bottle of wine. The buckets hold my wool and large pieces of fabric.

Now this is the "freak" side of the closet. I try not to open this door to much, especially these drawers. There are a couple of really sweet drawers that hold my Asian collection, homespun and polka dots...but, unfortunately because of room issues they have to be stored on this side of the closet (kinda like having to live on the other side of the railroad tracks). Cause this side holds....UFO's, PIGs and WIP's...I can't remember who told me but one of the Woolie followers also has PhD's. But, I can't remember what that means? Whenever I open this side I start hearing "trash talk"...and I just won't stand for it...besides, it kinda scares me...this is the scary side of the closet!

Someday I am going to be sooooo organized like Anne, courageous like Alma and creative like Kim...I think is I could roll them into one quilter...I could be SUPER Quilter, a new heroine who could champion those who are disorganized, can't cook and are fearful!

Saturday Stroll

I was up early Saturday morning working on a UFO...getting so close to finishing the top! I can't wait to show you! I am currently listening to the latest Janet Evanovich book, Explosive Eighteen while I am stitching. That is my favorite thing to do...sew while listening to book on CD.

Robin came by picked me up and off we went for a stroll through some shops and art galleries around Bend. It was fun to see what the local art scene was up too and I hope you will enjoy the stroll.

For the local folks, Art Works! at Tumalo was filled with all kinds of art...and they have great classroom spaces for rent that can be used for sewing groups. Owner Doe Badley is a quilter!

Ms. Inspiration

I am a blessed quilter because all I have to do is turn to my friend locally and on the Internet for inspiration. One of the quilters that I continue to enjoy the "WOW" factor from is Anne from Cottons 'n Wool Not only does she have a house to die for, a quilting studio that makes you want to have a "sit in" and never leave...she also is a fabulous quilter. I love her choice of fabrics, patterns and decor. The quilt featured here is a Bonnie Blue Quilt and is absolutely wonderful. The fabrics, colors, tone and value all sing to me!

I am now on pins and needles waiting for a call from my son and DIL. Lucky me they want me to be there for the birth of their first baby together. And, I get to hang with my grandson who is also awaiting the arrival of a much anticipated baby brother. Since I couldn't give my employer a specific date of arrival I took this next week off. Which means if I don't get the call I am going to get a lot of quilting done...those projects don't have a chance! I am hoping the weather improves a little since one of the mountain passes was closed due to a land slide!

Today Robin is picking me up for a jaunt to some art galleries! Life is Good!

Lesson Learned

I went to Barnes & Nobles yesterday because I found out that a Christmas gift I had ordered for my nephew's son never arrived. The process of tracking down the order and delivery was taking time and the manager told me to just browse while she was on hold.

I got a cup of coffee and headed to the quilt magazines...and found my favorite Quilt Mania and an annual publication by the International Quilt Festival. Since I am on a fabric diet drooling over what I want in the future seemed like a good idea! Until I got to the checkout stand...of course there was a line behind me...but when the clerk rang it up and said the total...$34.98!!!!!!!!!! I actually said in a somewhat loud voice...What???? she politely said, "$34.98. I said, "you gotta be kidding, for a couple of magazines?" She pointed out that some of them are pretty spendy...NO DUH. With the line behind me and my desire to drool over the pages I went ahead and made the purchase...but, let me tell you...from now on I am going to check out the price before I walk up to the register! Next time I might just sit down at a table and drool over them with a cup of coffee and then put them back on the shelf. What ever happened to the $3.99 magazine?

Then last night I sat down and paged through them...OMG...they were worth every penny. In fact the QuiltMania has the complete pattern by Lisa of Primitive Gatherings for the new Christmas BOM that is coming out in May that I was going to do!!!! Here it is January 20th and it is Christmas all over again!

It is a good thing I am at work today cause some of my wage is gonna pay for my magazines!

Lucky Charm

Before I begin today's jabber, jabber I wanted to talk about the front door at Jean Well's house. There has been some curiosity about how it functions. When I first walked up I literally stood there wondering how you get in or let someone know you are outside. It is massive...at least 5 inches or more thick. Heavy. I wondered if you were just supposed to talk to it...kinda like Dorothy outside the Wizard's palace. Then I noticed a doorbell recessed into the carving on the frame. The door does not have a handle on the outside. It is secured by a bolt that slides into the flooring on the inside. It swings open by a push from the inside and rotates open on post...most amazing and beautiful!

Tuesday I had my Lucky Charm class. It is a series where you can use the 5 inch charm packs to make something. Tuesday's class was a Valentine Day table runner and it will be the first time I will have a Valentine project actually done by Valentine's Day!!! Since it was freezing cold and snowing in Bend Enzo accompanied me to class hanging out in the car waiting for me to come and give him breaks...he is such a good little guy!

Jean Wells, Quilting Royalty

Yesterday I had an opportunity to visit the home of Jean Wells of Sisters, Oregon. I can't imagine there is anyone who quilts that does not know the name Jean Wells. For those of us blessed to be able to live in Central Oregon, Jean put our little land lock part of the state on the map!

She says that her grandmother was a strong early influence inspiring her to sew. With her artistic eye, determination and courage she opened the Stitchin Post and has been inspiring quilters for over 35 years! In 1975 the first Outdoor Quilt show was hung and has been a draw for thousands of quilters and quilt lovers ever since. When I asked how many quilts she has made in her life...somewhere between 1500-2000!

In 2005 her daughter Valori became a partner in the shop. You can visit the post on her life and studio by clicking on the link. Both women are incredible designers and inspire quilters around the world...all from a little town of about 1600 people.

Being a curious sort...and always wanting to learn not only about quilting but how people live their lives day to day it was a treat to visit Jean's home. She and her husband have been in the new place for about 2 1/2 years. Right on the edge of town she can walk or bike to the shop. With a beautiful view of the 3 Sisters range over a pasture with grazing horses...one has to wonder why she ever goes to the shop! Catherine Gray was the designer and Brad Nickleson the builder. They chose to build a passive solar home which keeps the inside temperature an even 66-68 degrees. Ok, ok...enough talking...and lets get to the slide show! New Friends & Old Friends

Remember earlier this week in a post I said I was going to treat my UFO's as friends instead of enemies. In my mind (scary place) I had made a rule that I wouldn't start any new project until I got my old ones done. Yesterday, I had another moment...WHY??? would I make this rule??? I can feel the stress even as I write it here! I have reclaimed my sewing room as a "No Flogging Zone" and made it again a place I love. No, I did not burn any sage, nor chant and cast any spells. I just stood in the middle of it and told my brain..."you're not the boss of me!" and let my heart take over.

There is nothing wrong with making new friends. I love new friends. I love it when I check my follower list and I see a new face...so, why would I deny a new project...just because there are old ones around. With that said...I have seen positive outcomes with the Fabric Diet. But, I know for a fact that I will only be on it for one quarter (sorry Sandy and Anne) It has helped me realize I have really cool fabrics that I ignore for the ease of just going in a shop and picking out all the supplies needed for a project. But, I also feel like I am punishing myself by denying that which I might need for a really wonderful project. Hummm maybe what I need to think about is that whatever project I choose to start it has to have some fabric from my stash included!?

Here is a peek at a new friend. A FREE BOM from the Raspberry Rabbit. The first block is sooo dang sweet. I have already prepped my fabrics (from my stash) for the entire project, which is wall hanging size. And, I had enough of the tone of brown wool for 6 months of the rabbits. I'll be off the diet by the time I need more brown.

Here is an 'ol friend. Block 10 of the Summer Penny Garden BOM by Primitive Gatherings. Only 2!!! 2 more blocks to go! and then there is a substantial wool applique border. Isn't this the most beautiful block!

Tomorrow a HUGE SURPRISE!!! Today I am heading over to Sisters for a class and after class I am going to be visiting Jean Wells at her home! Tomorrow I'll have photos of her sewing studio!!! and stash!!!! I know there have been articles featuring her spectacular home but there is nothing like a different perspective...and a Woolie one at that!

Step by Step

Ahhh, the stacks of projects have a dent. Step by step, inch by inch..I am working...no, having fun embracing my UFO's. WIP's and PIG's. So today's blog is to give you a peek, stir the curiosity and encourage you to embrace your projects!

My blue work is done! Like I said...a stitch at a time! This was a fun, relaxing project. The next step will be to make the blocks that go around the snowmen. I admit, I am an embroidery junkie! I am all ready to pick a new project and start the prep.

Christmas the Sequel

Yesterday was Christmas all over again! And, I am not complaining! Every year a couple of girlfriends and I have been getting together either for breakfast or dinner and exchanging gifts. This year due to numerous events in all our lives we couldn't do it December. We met at McKay's Cottage which is our favorite place to have breakfast and talked and talked and talked. It is not like we don't see each other several times a week but on this day it always seems different. We vowed to support and love each other...at least for one more year! LOL Look at the fun things I got! The butterflies spin on a long pole in your garden, a serving bowl set for my entertaining, thread...the non-lint producing kind!, and this awesome holder that you slip under your mattress and it hangs down to hold your glasses, books and any manner of sleep aids!

This last 6 months has been a difficult sleep time for me. My little monkey brain won't settle down...until 2 weeks ago when I read Andrew Weil's latest book and he suggested the non addictive melatonin because it doesn't interfere with any medications you take and has no side affects. Now I have taken this before but not in the way he suggested. The sublingual tablets you let dissolve under you tongue. Wow...I have been sleeping well for the last 2 weeks! Which makes me much more pleasant in the day light hours and my UFO's (my friends) has been impacted!

I ran out of olives yesterday. This is almost an emergency. I am addicted to Castellano olives and 6 of them are a serving. The best place to get them in Newport Market and when we arrived there were emergency personnel out front for just such an emergency...olive rescue! My oldest son used to do this kind of thing. The Bend Fire Dept. was training for a state wide stair climbing competition and raising money.

Here is the latest step of the UFO I am playing with. The cutting alone took me a while. 44 of this, 86 of that, 155 of...155...no wonder it took me a couple of hours to finish the cutting! Bet you can't wait to see what all these little pieces make!

Light Bulb Moment!

It is now day 14 of the New Year, about half way through the first month! The momentum is still moving fast uphill for us all. When 3 of the Fabric Stalkers stopped by they brought their latest and greatest projects. It seems the new year brings a renewed energy and with that some decisions. We all have looked back on the previous year, scooped up the positive and hopefully let go of the negative. It is all choices. This morning, I took a moment to really look at myself. Usually life moves at such speed we do not have "quiet" time. The benefit of blogging is that what you say is forever etched into the fiber of the Internet and can be retrieved!

I decided to take a look at where I was emotionally and with quilting a year ago. Take a "Look" by clicking on this link. I loved that my quilt room was a "No Flogging Zone." But, somehow by the end of the year I was back to flogging! I was talking about "UFO's" and I am still talking about "UFO's" What if, I looked at my UFO's, WIP's and PIG's as old friends. You never give up on your friends. You are supportive, you laugh till you pee, and you embrace. AND, here is the biggie-light bulb moment...when you embrace your ol' projects like you do your friends...you want to be with them...which may result in enjoying the process and completion! My cup is half full...no it runneth over with UFO's and I am one lucky girl!

Here is Lori's latest wool project! Beautiful! Mine is in kit form (we bought them at the same time) but, no flogging here...I will enjoy this project because hers is really wonderful!

Irene and I got together to work on our Civil War project which has been ongoing by Barbara Brackman. Irene is really making progress and I am sorry to say I did not get photos of the blocks she completed but I did take a photo of her fabrics which have now reproduced into 2 boxes....hummm...maybe that is why they are called reproduction fabrics???? Do not leave them alone in the same box!

I on the other hand finished 3 blocks that day! Which is a record for me. Last time I just sat around and watched Irene sew and only completed 1 block!

Quiet River

Quiet River was mom's place in Bend. When family or friends came the door was opened as long as you followed the "book of rules." The Fabric Stalkers have been enjoying an in-town retreat each February when winter seems to be dragging on and we just needed a little girlfriend/sewing time. It is different then our other retreats because we can zip away for appointments or obligations knowing our sewing machine and projects are waiting.

The Fabric Stalkers made some Asian themed quilt blocks with Jane donating the center blocks in memory of mom. Robin put the blocks together in a wonderful setting, pieced the border and then had our favorite LA quilt it up with all kinds of wonderful Asian designs. She brought it over to me yesterday when 4 of us gathered for some sewing time. Well...it blew me away! My heart was beating so hard in my chest. Although my mom believed quilting put weight on ((lol))...I know deep down she was proud that I could sew and she loved that the Fabric Stalkers stayed at Quiet River. Even when we took a break from the retreat she continued to tell everyone in her neck of the woods that we were quilting away up here! LOL Robin pieced her initials in the border!!! She would have loved this!!!

I spent yesterday thinking. Lots of thinking. What to do about this? What to do about that? Should I do this? Should I do that? It was all good because I had the time and the peace to contemplate. My first meeting was in the woods near my house. It was FREEEZZZZING, there was no snow and the trail was dry. I took my administrative assistant, Enzo and we headed out. He doesn't take notes well but, he more than makes up for it by his good sense to agree with everything I say. Although there is no quilting in this blog...in fact some quilting did occur yesterday, just not enough to photograph and cheer about. So today is about a walk in the woods with Enzo.

I may be in a minority of individuals who love Juniper trees. This is one of my favorite on the walk.. The thing about Junipers although they can be dirty, the berries make great Gin. They suck about 30 gallons of water a day out of the earth and they have history. We have a Juniper forest here in Central Oregon that dates back before Christ! And when a Juniper tree is singing it's siren song it is the most interesting because the trunk and branches grow willy nilly and without foliage they are fascinating

I did say that Enzo and I went on a walk but in reality the first half was a climb. We headed up the River Trail and then found our deer trail up the side of Awbrey Butte. When I say deer trail...I mean a single narrow trail that has been beaten down by years of the same herd making a path. For Enzo it is a treat as he run and climbs up, nose to the ground...for me...it is a struggle. In some areas I have to hang on to the roots of trees and bushes so as to not tumble back down. In the end...the view is worth it. This view is of the Deschutes River looking south.

Once we climb out of the trees and brush we end up in a neighborhood of what used to be million dollar homes (some still are). I am sure the people are peeking out their windows wondering where the heck we came from. But, as with the rest of the nation building slowed way down and the deer trail ends on a vacant lot at the end of a cul du sac. Once we walk down the street we pick up the Upland Trail and head back down the butte. In the photo below you can just see the trail in the middle of the picture.

This trail although meant for humans is used by deer, coyote, raccoon, skunk and I could swear I saw cougar prints. Which made the trip down more precarious. When heading down this trail you have to watch the ground for rocks and stumps, least you take a tumble. But once I saw the potential cougar print I started watching above me. A lot of runners use this trail which means when we see someone coming Enzo and I step off the trail to let them pass. Which brings me to a story. One day a handful of years back I was training for the Portland Marathon by trail running. As I passed 3 ol' guys they yelled, "cougar bait." I stopped, turned around and yelled back..."all I have to do is run faster than you guys!" They howled in laughter.

As you can see Enzo is really in his element...always ahead, looking back to say, "do you need anything boss?" sometimes I think he is really saying, "get your $%^& moving!"

Hello, My Name is Anna...and this is Day 1

Yesterday was a perfect day for me. You'd have to understand the inner mechanics of my brain to know what a perfect day is...not because it was a sunny day, nor a day filled with fabric...but, in fact is a day where my brain is being fed information (OMG...the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree!) and I receive lots of good information that helps me figure out what the next step will be. I AM a totally goal oriented person. I think I might have been a greyhound dog in a former life and someone put the bunny on the track in front of me.

After dealing with some issues related to the recent events in our family's life I headed to the dentist to get a new set of retainers. Here I am AARP and yes, I do wear retainers. But, this small step in doing something that is necessary for healthy teeth I started down the path of "what else can I do." The next stop was Woolies. Some of my favorite people. Joyful, informative and supportive. 2 of my fellow woolies are also on the fabric diet...so there was a lot of conversation about how good "THEY" felt about the fabric diet. #$%^ I wonder if they got home to THIS in their mailbox. The fabric devil does tempt...I could just picture myself in the alley behind the quilt store, dirty...clutching this catalog...NOOOOO I AM in control and since the first of the year I seem to have more money in my checkbook!

So I pondered...if I could do this for a quarter...and in fact, I am making lots of progress on my pile of projects...what else could I do? Sitting next to Marilyn I got to pick her brain about retirement...my dream state of being. I don't care what Suzi Orman says...I want to retire and I want to do it NOW. But...then I am not impulsive when it comes to what I want to do but methodically planning for success, the sooner the better. Sooooo....here it comes...Marilyn said the best investment for retirement is...good health. %^&* not a bigger stash. Which means...I am back on Weight Watchers. I mean "REALLY" on WW, not just stash building weight watchers. But point counting...what do you mean that a rib eye steak is 20 points!!! kinda weight watchers. Along with my UFO log...I will be adding a weight loss log...Why you ask? (or maybe you could give a rats a**) I hate WW meetings...I barely survive the 1st Sat. BOM meetings and they are giving me free fabric. But some accountability is good and so I will do it in writing to myself and whoever else cares.

Soul Food

As I walk through this period of time, reflecting on the past...my family...and figuring out what I want from the next few chapters of my life...I am seeking ways to nurture the soul. Historically not much of a cook I decided to AGAIN try to cook something worth eating. Split Pea Soup. Why I do not know! I have a memory of driving down Hwy 101 in California with my family and stopping at a place called Split Pea Andersons??? They served "all you can eat" Split Pea Soup...but really, how much split pea soup can one eat on a road trip?! Anyhoo, for whatever reason that is what I chose to make. The recipe was right on the bag of split peas. The real hurdle was...HH doesn't eat pea soup. After dropping some soup off to Robin who loves pea soup I stopped at Baldy's BBQ and picked up dinner for HH. And there we stood in the kitchen, me with my soup and HH with his rib eye sandwich...we were both happy!

Oh Yeah....it didn't stop there. HH's favorite cookies are oatmeal so I tried a batch from the Martha Stewart Cookie cookbook. In my opinion are not near as good as Julie's at work but HH loved that I made him cookies and he said they taste good.

Finally...geesh...she sure is jabbering way too much and not about quilting! Here is a photo of the WIP (work in progress) of a UFO that has languished in my sewing room for a while. I purchased the pattern and fabrics in 2010 on a trip to Holly Hills with some of the Fabric Stalkers. It sat in my sewing room until Spring 2011 when I completed one row of large presents. Then back to the floor in the corner until this week. I do believe this UFO will be one of the 2012 successes!

Genius or Insanity??? You Decide!

My college roommate (we are now AARP material) sent me this photo of her latest creation. OMG! I am not sure if back in 1974-1975 I was living with a genius or, if unbeknown to me...a future insane quilt individual??? What I do know, this is absolutely beautiful! She was such a studious roommate (cough, cough, cough) majoring in ??? anthropology I believe. I on the other hand changed my major regularly.

The reason she makes such spectacular quilts and I do not is that I am allergic to paper piecing and batiks...I have a doctor's note and an epi pen to be used if I should some how succumb to an anaphylatic reaction. I even get a little short of breath looking at this photo. Every year at the Sister's Outdoor Quilt Show I look for her quilts. I don't have to worry about finding them or my allergies because I can never get close enough due to the large crowd standing in front of her quilts with their mouths dropped open!

Anyhoo, I guess I'll get back to working on my UFO's...none are genius material but insane...that is another question.

I have a new challenge as of yesterday. I signed up for the Christmas mystery BOM at BJ's. First, no fabric purchased and no quilters were harmed in this first meeting...although this program may kill you, cause SOB, loose bowels and all manner of rashes! (this was said in a really fast pharmaceutical commercial voice) Ok, here it comes...the rationalization. I had to sign up for the BOM. I owe it to the Woolies! To report on what is happening in the Central Oregon quilting community AND I finished Henrietta....you get it right???!!! The challenge will be I can't buy any fabric and I have to get the block done before the first Sat. in Feb. Vicki gives you all the block fabrics...just not the background. I will have to scrap my background and hope for the best. After all...this is for all of you...to show that one CAN survive a fabric diet!

Although I did not spend a penny on fabric at BJ's I did buy $18 worth of Girl Scout cookies for HH. Cecelia was at 1st Sat with her mother who is her Daisy Troop leader. They had some Show 'n Tell to share.

...and as you can see Cecelia has a Quilting Badge! I feel better knowing that there is a next generation of quilter!

A Present For You!

Does anyone want these left over fabrics from my Henrietta Whiskers BOM? If you do just leave me a comment and be a registered follower of the blog...oh yeah and be sure you are not a "no-reply" follower please so I can write you that you're a winner! We'll see who the dog dish coughs up!

I am not a floral fabric kinda gal and so these fabrics were chosen by myself as a challenge. Although I sometimes gagged through the project I really do think it turned out sweet. I did change the finish because I wanted to have a square quilt. Originally there was an upper and lower banner with wool applique. Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs was so sweet to have put on this free BOM and I am glad I participated.

The sunrise was beautiful yesterday morning although you can't see it for all the trees. It is very different than our usual winter. We do tend to get a second summer in January. But, it is strange that we have had NO SNOW this winter. Last night HH came home from work and decided to whisk me out of my hibernation to the Riverhouse for dinner. During the dinner the employees of the Riverhouse were all excited because it was snowing outside. ROFLOL...you can tell how desperate we are around here because that wasn't snow...but little tiny white things that melted as soon as it hit a surface.

The only snowflakes around here are these ones that HH strung along the back deck to encourage the Snow God.

Yesterday was again spent in quiet contemplation in my sewing room. Trying to figure out which UFO I want to work on??? Where is that dang quilting slave driver??? In between straining my brain over what to work on... I had to make flight reservations to San Francisco next month for some business. What a hoot! All the extra fees are actually hysterically funny. You can pay $349 dollars up front so you can take 2 bags every flight for a year. You can pay $18 for trip insurance. For $38 you can breeze through the security check???? Hummm wonder if the terrorist know this? And, for some additional moola you can board first to get an overhead bin before anyone else instead of knocking people aside to get your bag in the bin first! Where is the fun in that?!

Quilt Blocks By The Inch

Hummm...I am trying to find creative ways in order to stimulate the quilting juices. I could hire a Quilting Slave Driver...but, I found in my search that it would require me to start more projects. Because, my slave driver would need a quilted loin cloth!

And then...I thought why not quilt by the inch?! Yesterday I dedicated the day to quiet time in my sewing room...in between paper work. Since my summer stars were still lying around I decided to work on them. They are labor intensive with 12, 1 1/2 inch pieces making up each block. I was able to make 5 of them which now gives me a 3 inch stack of stars!!!

I still have 35 more stars to make...some other day...

BUT, today I decided to really throw myself over the top! Since going on this fabric diet, which is now 6 days old I have been entering every "Free" Give Away in Blogland! LOL and I have been printing out "Free" patterns...what is wrong with me? I already have a million patterns, kits and fabric yardage! It is kinda like my patients who cannot eat or drink the day of surgery...omg...they'll eat or drink up until 11:59 PM and then come in talking about what they are going to have as soon as they blow this pop stand!

You ask...what might put me over the top??? The "Free" Scrappy Plate Club at Bunny Hill Designs. I have always...I mean ALWAYS wanted to make a Dresden plate quilt! Oh yeah...I am gonna be digging through my stash today, unless I win some fabric Give Away on the net!

"Time Cloak"

A team of physicists at Cornell University have created a wrinkle in time which they have called "temporal cloaking," Inside it things can occur that are entirely undetectable to the ordinary observer. I think this is where my grieving has been lurking behind a "time cloak." The only way I can tell it is there is because i cry at the drop of a hat and I am tired all the time. So, yesterday after work I came home and fell asleep at 2:00 in the afternoon! I was awoken by a call from my supervisor who said they are granting me 3 "bereavement" days. It was like a gift of oxygen. And so, I have a block of time to regroup.

...and I can regroup in my new chair. This is the most comfortable chair to sit and stitch. Even Robin says it is comfortable...the only draw back for her is that she can't fit her dog Brim in with her! LOL

I LOVE the fabric!

...here is a peek at what I have been working on. When you can't really concentrate, redwork...or in this case bluework in perfect. One thread color and with the transfer-eze, you just follow the lines. I have 3 snow people done and 2 more to go.

Quilting In America 2010

As reported by our very own Marilyn (who only spent $494.68 on quilting in 2011) the latest statistics on Quilting in America! This is only the 6th in a series of studies done since 1994 with the intent of determining the amount of time and money spent on their hobby.

As of 2010 the total number of quilters in the US exceeds 21 million.

The Quilting household spent an average of $219 in 2010 (Marilyn is above average)

Dedicated Quilters spent more than $600 per year on quilting-related purchases (Marilyn is not dedicated)

The Majority (85%) have a room dedicated to quilting activities (Marilyn is in the Majority)

In the past 12 months each spent an average of $144.10 on thread (Marilyn didn't...Beth did)

As you can see by the photo...Marilyn is quite happy and smug with her $494.68 total purchases! LOL

Now on to what Sandy has been up too in the last couple of weeks! I love this first one...it is a pillow! just not stuffed yet.

In The Blink Of An Eye

I am still spending a good portion of my brain matter thinking about 2012. I have my "word" for 2012 (grace) and I have my quilt challenges laid out before me. But, the biggest impact on my ruminations has been the passing of my mother and the recent passing of my mother "SO." He would be appalled to be refereed by this moniker. They met around 1980 when he sailed into the harbor and stayed. They had been inseparable, sailing and traveling the world. They both lived large and were committed to each other. His life totally changed when mom had her first illness in May 2011. At 94 he couldn't stay by himself and so was displaced to his children. Then, there was the note on her calendar...Ernie was coming home. She died 2 days before that was going to happen. He said he lived a good life and that he had a great run with mom. He would hang on till Christmas but there was no reason for him to stay any longer...and so on Dec. 31st he peacefully left this life...not taking one step into a new year. They were together longer than my parents were before my dad passed. He was the only grandfather my sons ever knew. He had lost 2 wives, his first in childbirth while he was away in the military and the second to cancer after raising 3 additional children. They were two committed, hardworking individuals that found a way to create a life together. Soooo, 2012 for us will be one of change because we will be paying attention at our age to what we want our life to look and feel like. We have had 2 individuals who have given us many lessons. And, we now know...that life can change in the blink of an eye.

Yesterday was a peaceful day spent with HH. Much to my surprise he had the day off. I got up early and pieced a couple of stars while listening to a book on CD. After breakfast we took a walk on the river trail behind our house and came upon this little tree that someone had hiked to and decorated for the holidays. Enzo was so funny....he knew this was not normal and so stretched his body way out...not getting too close to the alien tree but allowing him to sniff the balls for danger.

The as we were heading back and cut through a grassy field we came upon this sight on a picnic bench. Someone had found a pair of glasses and put them in a baggie hoping for the owner to return and find them. I love the people of Central Oregon!

OMG...It's Already Jan. 2nd!!!

The title of this blog says it all...when I reread yesterdays blog which I do each day looking for any spelling errors that might have slipped through...I was shocked! What am I crazy! It is too much! I am not a magician or witch...how am I ever going to be able to do all that I have set before me???? Then I got an email from Mary (a woolie follower from the Southwest) and she has been doing all of this and more for 3 years!!! and 2012 is year #4!!! Mary, you are my guru!

Instead of clicking my heels together and say, "There's no Place like home" I am going to chant, " you can finish 1 UFO each month, make a holiday project each month, machine quilt one project each month and not buy any fabric for 3 months." I need new shoes.

Anyhoo, Robin came over all excited to show her 2011 "finished" Free BOM mystery. BJ's Quilt Basket has a new BOM each year. They provide the pattern and fabric for the block with you adding a piece from your stash or purchasing new fabric. They always provide at least 2 different colorways to appeal to different quilters. Robin chose brights, I chose 30's (mine is officially a WIP) This program is on the 1st Saturday of each month and you can do it by mail. You get the next months block free if you have finished the previous months block. For those long distance you just send a photo of your block. Tell them the Woolie sent ya! The biggie, and why Robin's is done...anyone who has their top pieced by the first meeting of the New Year gets their names in a drawing for Quilting by Long Arm Magician Sandy!

Yesterday was day 1 for all the challenges I have set before me. I started by going through my tops and deciding which ones I wanted to start with...and...then seeing if I had backing fabric. Here is the backing for an Asian wall hanging. It was fabric that I used from my stash to make curtains for HH's office a few years ago. A couple of years later they built a new building, put him on the top floor with a spectacular view. Which meant the curtains came home. I couldn't part with the fabric. I have always loved this fabric and am happy that it will get new life.

Here is the thing about UFO's, Pig, and WIP's. They ended up in that pile because you either don't like the project, grew disenchanted with the fabrics or like me got distracted by a new project. The hard part is figuring out where you left off and how you originally organized the construction. So exists my Summer Stars BOW. I love them but I have a million of them to make. I decided to try a novel approach to my challenges. Create a PLAN. For today...my sewing time will be dedicated to Summer Stars.

But first HH and I have to go to the movie and see Sherlock Holmes! Have a great Monday!

This year the Woolie is gonna be a wonderful adventure. I know I had a blast with the blog in 2011 and now we are starting year #2!!! I have enjoyed all your comments and getting to know quilters from around the world. You have been a wonderful support especially for my quilting! Thank you from the bottom of my stash!

So what is in store for the follower who want to follow the way of the "Woolie?" Well I spent 4 hours!!!! 4 freaking hours trying to figure out how to load this wonderful first ornament and link it to a button on the blog!!! So far the Internet is winning but my next step is to ask my youngest son...humm just got off of Skyp with him and forgot to ask...dang dorothy (as Robin would say).

I am beginning my Fabric Diet which means for me no purchases that do not include backings, notions and batting. This will run 1 quarter from Jan.-March. I am still sweating over this one. But you can make your own rules...like you will only buy 3 yard cuts! LOL

Next, UFO challenge which means I will finish one project a month...and, again you can make your own rules...you just have to follow them! Finish for me...means finished, quilted, bound and labeled! And it can be a UFO or PIG (which for me means a kit purchased over 6 months ago) a month! I need to get some of these kits done. I will post a running photo each month of what I finished.

This will be followed by the Free Motion Challenge which for me will me quilting one of my own project each month. Will help in practicing my quilting. I used to be a good quilter and even had a long arm...what happened!

...and finally to complete a Fall/Winter which includes a Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas project each month so I will actually have decor ready.

New Year's Eve, it has sooooo much potential doesn't it?! It is a day to reflect back on the previous year, reveling in the joy and cry for the losses. It is the day that we either choose to live in the past or reach for the future...

I would love to hear what your "word" is for 2012. I have in recent years as encouraged by my cousin chosen a "word" to use as a touch stone for the year. This year my word will be "grace." To approach all things that I face in living without my mom, in settling her estate, in meeting a new grandchild, in seeing my youngest son marry...with grace. Although I suspect there will be no grace in meeting our new grandchild and seeing my son marry...but only full out crazy joy!!!!

I love this quote by John Kennedy. I have tried to work on "not" living in the past and carry forward the joyful memories. I have had a harder time concentrating on the present and not worrying about the future. But the men in my life are more present oriented and that is a gift. And, I have such wonderful girlfriends...they are a blessing to my life, rounding it out in a richness that I cherish.

I am soooo glad I decided to check my post box yesterday! Normally when I have made some online purchases I tend to avoid the box...needing to let the purchases rest there before allowing then into my brain and house. But, yesterday I decided to check the box and alleluia!!! The Quilter's Affair class and event schedule had arrived!!! I absolutely LOVE this years poster!!! OK...I can see there are too many exclamation points in this post...so I'll tone it down...but REALLY!!! Kathy Deggendorfer created an amazing piece of art! The class schedule is incredible and the events will appeal to a wide variety of visitors and locals. They have expanded the events and so those visiting from afar will have more to choose from.

I had to show you what was left of our Christmas gift from our youngest son and future daughter in law. The reason...because I think our Emily could be related to Alma of Blackbird Design . I have only known...one candy maker, Marilyn Will (a woolie & material girl) who makes a Divinity that is divine. The toffee that Emily made was incredible. I am not a toffee person, leaning towards the dark chocolate variety of candy but, HH lives for toffee...the fact that a future DIL can actually make toffee. Well, he is in candy heaven. The reason we have some left, it is doled out like precious jewels to be savored and, I love this toffee! HH likes to savor things kinda like Enzo. Whereas I am like a Labrador...gulp, gulp, gulp...I break off little pieces hoping he won't notice...which reminds me of brownies that Val (a Fabric Stalker) makes for our quilting retreats. Everyone (except Jane) takes little tiny slivers hoping no one will notice that a whole section has disappeared. Besides when eaten this way the calories don't count.

I thought I would give you a peek at Block #9 of the Primitive Gatherings BOM! I have to say...although this is taking me forever...I am loving it! After this block I have 3 more to go and the border...I must keep focus on the UFO Challenge...and the fabric diet.

Can you see that lunch pail sitting high up on the shelf...it holds...an applique BOM...whatever in the world was I thinking about?! I wasn't...I was running on pure addiction and now I have 3 days till my Fabric 12 step program starts. As you can see....I have received 3 months and have not even started month one...why? Because I still have 2 other BOM's that I am working on...and, in reality those 2 were actually BOW's that I was not able to stay caught up on!

One of the exciting things about visiting my dear son and family is we got to see the baby's room!!! See the cute name banner that Robin made for the new little guy!

We gave them this old dresser and he sanded it down and painted little monkeys all over it! Adorable!!

Enzo was freaked about their wood floors and wanted to hide under their dining table all day! Their place is 3 stories and I had to escort him down the wooden stairs like a "service" person! lol

...and here is my sweet grandson. Every time I see him I swear he grows an inch! He is wild, energetic and amazing...of course that's nana talking.

What can I say...dinner was fabulous! 2 professional chefs fixed an amazing dinner...I had never had truffle oil before!

HH and I just sat and watched the magic! It was just like watching a reality show of Iron Chef! The dining room in 2 steps higher than the kitchen and this photo was taken through an opening in the wall...just like watching TV! yum, yum, yum! Our son, DIL, her sister Becky (chef #1 with the wonderfully curly red hair) and friend Michele (chef #2)

The trip home was busy. NO SNOW as we approached Mt Hood! What the hey!!! It is Dec. 26th...how can there be no snow! Lots of traffic both ways and crazy drivers.

Then we turned the corner and...there was snow!!! sweet!!! we need the snow!

I'll be sharing some holiday photos during the week but today I decided to share my trip to Fabric Depot. For those who want to go on a fabric diet with me...Sandy, Anne and I are starting Jan. 1st. The only purchases that will be allowed are backings, notions and batting. We are going to do it by quarters. So the first quarter will run from Jan.-April, then we will re-evaluate for the next quarter. With that said...I am in somewhat of a panic...so, when HH asked if I wanted to stop at Fabric Depot before leaving Portland....well...I couldn't resist! But, I can tell you this...it won't be that hard to go on this diet...because the fabric price was $11.99 - $13.99 a yard!!!! YOWZERS!!! Of course I bought some anyway cause in 5 days I'm not going to spend myself broke! LOL This diet will blend well with the UFO challenge. Won't you join me???

The Party's Over...Or...is it just beginning??? Give Away Alert!

First things first! Thank you all for the holiday greetings yesterday! I hope everyone had a Christmas filled with good cheer! Unfortunately I was unable to send my greeting because being in a hotel...the wireless here does not recognize my mail box. Secondly I have been dying to show you the completed Christmas wall hanging I made with the scraps of fabric I won from Kim's Big Quilting Adventure My dear DIL loved it and I am finally able to show the finished project! I think it turned out adorable but not as adorable as that bump you see peeking around the quilt! It was so wonderful sharing the holidays with my cousin & family, my son and his family...especially playing nerf basketball with my grandson...he was so sweet to give his nana extra chances! LOL

While relaxing at my son's house, the hotel or in the car I was able to stitch the final block for Henrietta Whiskers!!! and make some headway on Block 9 of my BOW from Primitive Gatherings. I feel the UFO Challenge excitement and can't wait to dive in starting next week!!!!

The second quilting surprise of the day was a minki blankie I made for my DIL's sister, Becky! She was so surprised and I know she is going to enjoy all the yummy soft warmth and love that the blankie brings with it!

Give Away, Day 11!!!! It's Not My Fault!

According To Brian Knutson...you know Brian, he an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Stanford University...well anyhoo, he said, "we are built to forage, just like rats, just like dogs!" so we have brain circuitry that "compels us to go out there...to get good stuff, even if we don't know what the good stuff is!" Scientist say we are to some extent wired for shopping. It seems to tap into circuits that originally spurred our ancestors to go out looking for food! No wonder I break out into a cold sweat when I think of the quilting diet that Sandy, Anne & I are embarking on in the first quarter of 2012. Today I shopped on the Internet, ordering stuff and then deleting just to work up my "denial muscles." My nucleus accumbens is at work when I am considering a purchase...that is according to Brian. AND...my prefrontal cortex is where I decide to buy or not buy...hummm There were 5 tips from experts on how to control shopping urges but since my quilt diet doesn't start till the 1st of January...I decided to ignore those!

The give away for Day 11 is close to my heart because I loved working on this project and finished it before July 4th this year! It was fun to stitch...so I hope you are the winner!!! I made it through yesterday! 24 hours of being in my PJ's crying every time I opened a Christmas card. My sister always sends out one of those family photo cards and she warned me that the one she was sending included mom on her last visit. Even knowing it was coming didn't prepare me for seeing it...((sigh)) What do they say...time heals all wounds...or better yet a great cup of coffee and a fun Give Away!!! Enzo was such a sweetie, just hanging out with me and agreeing to ball chasing down the driveway while I stood in the garage...I really did not go outside all day! LOL

This morning I am upright, dressed, makeup on...and have a full day scheduled of "have too's" ...and I started it with a great cup of cafe mocha! YUM!

Coffee consumed I am ready to announce what the dog dish revealed!!!! Stray Stitches who said, "Take care of yourself! What a darling pillow. I would love the opportunity to win the pattern. I am a regular follower :)

Give Away, Day 9! 4 Days Till Christmas...NO WAY!

I am not sure about you but it doesn't not feel like Christmas is just 4 days away! It might be...because it is sunny and there is no snow on the ground. Or maybe it is because my family is all over the place this year...I am looking forward to getting a kid fix this weekend. Christmas is more fun with kids...at least for me. Today or rather last night, I hit the wall. I have been non-stop since Sept. 10th when my mom unexpectedly departed these waters and between my back giving me fits and my "can't slow down a moment" attitude I finally reached a day where I can't put one foot outside my front door. Although I am not able to respond to all the emails during this Give Away time I really appreciate all your notes. So today I nurture my back and my soul....but...

...yesterday I took Lucky Charms class with Tamra at the Stitchin' Post. It was such a pleasure to take a break from life and be a student. It had been so long since I had used my little sewing machine that it took me 20 minutes to set it up and get it working! lol I can't wait till next months class...we're gonna make a Valentine's Day table runner! Watching these old Christmas videos is not only a personal walk down memory lane but as I look at the other people in the video I realize how much society has changed...notice the big hair and how all the fans are dressed...in dresses! lol

I am using the new Valdani Tweed thread with my latest embroidery project. I got this newest selection of thread from my friend Anne of Cottons 'n Wool but you can find it on the Primitive Gatherings web site. I love it! The mixed colors are perfect for the basket in this project. This project is a combination of embroidery and wool! I am in heaven! lol I of course used Transfer Eze and my college roommate Terri has asked me to talk about Transfer Eze...so tomorrow I will post a step by step on how I use it! A Transfer Eze tutorial!
