Being a quilter in Central Oregon is heaven! We have 9 shops all within a 45 minute drive and they all have their own appeal. And now, I have added Portland to my quilting life! I will be sharing my shopping, projects, mistakes, successes and travels...all things quilt!...so come join me in my world of quilting, books, movies and restaurants!
I had the opportunity to visit a Long Arm magician...or should I say artist! Sandy Lachowski has been a Central Oregon long arm favorite. Although, those of us who send our quilts know we are going to get back a work of art, most probably know little else about the person. I decided to get to know more about the person who I trust my quilts too, much like you'd want to know the babysitter you left your kids with! lol
I was fascinated to find out that Sandy was studying Neurobiology on a full ride scholarship when she decided to take a job with the Postal Service. What she discovered was, she loved being a "mailman." Delivering a regular route and making contact for a moment in time. Once she started having kids it was time to move out of Southern California. And so she and her husband (also a mail carrier) relocated to Prineville. She had always been crafty, selling items at Saturday Market and the old Crafter's Warehouse downtown. It was this exposure that first brought quilting into her life. Taking her first quilt class in 1992 at BJ's Quilt Basket while she was 8+months pregnant didn't give Barb, the original owner a moments peace. But it did allow for a friendship to begin and by 1999 Sandy was long arm quilting at BJ's with the support of Crys Kyle and Donna Richmond.
Fast forward and in 2000 she purchased her first long arm machine and her quilting world expanded and yet allowed her to be home with her family. She currently quilts about 8-10 quilts a week depending on what the economy is doing. And...she like to piece tops that are outside the box in design, so a top may take her a while to complete but, she currently only has 1 UFO!!!!
Her other passion is training her dogs for Agility competitions. As an active member of the Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club she participates with her 3 dogs!!!! Jordan, Magic and Eddie. She love the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed whose history is connected to lion hunting and is known for their bravery.
If you are interested in having Sandy quilt her magic and art into your quilt tops you can drop or mail them to BJ's Quilt Basket. The link is on the left side of the blog.
